COROLLARY Corollary: a proposition inferred immediately from a proved proposition with little or no additional proof. Corollary started as an idea: a desire to create a spherical form using the language of the press brake, an industrial machine used to create form in flat steel plate through straight bends. How can a sphere be created through straight bends and a plethora of flat surfaces? Corollary I is comprised of twelve individual identical patterns, each formed from quarter inch steel plate and fabricated together to create a 38” diameter sphere. During the ideation stage of this process, I discovered that these spherical patterns, when nested together, established a new, intriguing pattern in their negative spaces, ultimately leading to the discovery of Corollary II. I was able to make these two free standing sculptures with zero material waste. These pieces can be found in the Metal Museum’s permanent collection. The resulting wall pieces describe elements of the sphere and highlight the relationship between Corollary I and Corollary II.
